FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Shoulder or harness carriers and other such devices could place the child in the parent’s crush zone, injure the parent’s back or cause injury to the child. The BABY B’AIR® flight vest was designed specifically to address these concerns, allowing the child to travel out of the parent’s crush zone while attached to the lap belt, not the parent’s body. The BABY B’AIR® flight vest is the ONLY device to address these lap baby safety concerns.

The FAA changed the existing regulations in early 1996, banning devices other than approved car seats during takeoff, taxi and landing. This FAA rule change DOES NOT prohibit the use of the BABY B'AIR® flight vest during the cruise portions of the flight. The FAA banned belly belts and other devices during take-off, taxi and landing because they could cause more harm than good.

Since the vest has been designed to address the specific safety concerns of aircraft, Baby B'Air is working to win approval of our product so that it may be used during the entire flight. Until that rule is changed, the vest cannot be used during takeoff, taxi and landing in the U.S. The applicable FAA regulation, known as a CFR, is clearly marked on the back of each vest for the benefit of the parent and flight personnel. These regulations may also be found in the card that came with the vest. It is a good idea to keep this card handy when you use the vest on any airline.

No. Surprisingly, over 90% of all injuries occur during flight, mainly due to turbulence. Children are often left unprotected during this time and even removed from car seats. Parents are encouraged to secure their child throughout the flight.

The FAA prohibits children under 2 from sitting in a seat alone without a car seat or the C.A.R.E.S. system. C.A.R.E.S. is for kids who are at least 1 year old, you can find more info about it at kidsflysafe.com. We have no relationship with the company that makes C.A.R.E.S.

Many changes have occurred in the airline industry and it takes time to educate the thousands of individuals throughout the airline industry. Many airline employees love BABY B'AIR's flight vest since, as standby passengers, they cannot guarantee a seat for their infant carriers.

We have worked closely with representatives of the FAA and major airlines since 1999 developing this product. We listened to their advice and input before introducing the BABY B'AIR® flight vest to the market. However, there are many people who are just now seeing this new product and learning of the complete content of 14CFR part 21, permitting use of a BABY B'AIR flight vest to be used during cruise portions of flight.

Simply show the flight attendant the tag on the back of the BABY B'AIR® flight vest listing the FAA ruling noting that it does not prohibit use during flight. You may encounter flight personnel who are not familiar with the entire content of the FAA ruling and the tag is placed on the vest to provide the exact location of the rule.

Unfortunately, you cannot use a Baby B'Air flight vest in a seat that has an airbag installed in the seatbelt. The way the airbag deploys could cause injury to your baby and interfere with the operation of the airbag if it inflates.

We also want you to be aware that no child safety restraint system or car seat could be used in that seat with an airbag seatbelt either. They are only properly tested and rated safe for adults.

Many newer and some older aircraft use the airbag seatbelt. Airbag seatbelts are often found in first class cabins and on some small airplanes like corporate jets.

Please call your airline's customer service to find out if any of the aircraft on your reservation comes equipped with these devices. However, be aware that sometimes the airplane scheduled for your journey may not end up being the aircraft you actually fly on; they are sometimes changed hours or minutes before your flight's departure due to maintenance or other issues.

The gate agents and cabin crews should be able to accommodate you if you discover you need to move to another seat.

We recommend you measure your baby's head circumference to ensure you get a proper fit vest for your child's safety. Place a cloth tape at their forehead and measure around the crown of their head.

  • Toddler size fits babies with a head circumference larger than 15 inches (38 cm).
  • Infant size fits babies with a head circumference of 15 inches (38 cm) or less.

Your infant wears the Baby B’Air as a vest.  Place over the child’s head, and secure by adjustable straps on both sides under the baby’s arms.  Third strap comes up between baby’s legs and buckles to the front with another adjustable strap.

After take-off, the parent feeds their seat belt through the loop on the back of the Baby B’Air, refastens the seat belt and tightens seat belt.  Your infant can now be held, fed and even changed while both parent and child remain securely fastened in their seat.

The parent can read, eat or even nap knowing their baby cannot fall or pull from their loving arms.

  • ARRIVE EARLY! This will also allow you to pre-board with some airlines plus extra time for security check.
  • IN YOUR CARRYON: Formula or baby food, spoon, snacks, bib, juice, bottles, baby pain reliever, pacifier, extra diapers and change of clothing, plastic bag for dirty clothes and baby blanket. Baby essentials are nearly impossible to find in airports! Formula, breast milk, juice, and other essential baby liquids are generally exempt from the 3-1-1 liquids rule (less than 3.4 oz or 100 ml)
  • LAP CHILD: Seat child away from aisle in window or middle seat.  Airline carts can injure a baby’s arms.
  • CAR SEAT: You must buy a separate airline seat to use a car seat, labeled for use on aircraft. Make sure seat is properly installed.  75% of car seats are improperly installed, making them dangerous to baby.
  • TAKEOFF & LANDING: Nursing, a bottle, or pacifier at these times will reduce pressure in baby’s ears.
  • IN FLIGHT:Fly during naptime so baby is used to sleeping during time in the air. Don’t forget a small, soft toy.
  • AGE GUIDELINES: Children up to 24 months can fly free on parent’s lap. Healthy children over 6 weeks can fly safely.  Check with your pediatrician.

Check TSA's website for tips about traveling with children and liquids exemptions for carry-ons with babies.

Current regulations and permitted use

Current regulations DO NOT restrict the use of the Baby B’Air Flight Vest® during the cruise portion of the flight, when over 90% of all injuries occur.  However the vest may not be used during take-off, taxi and landing in the U.S.  Prior to the product’s introduction, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned all child restraint devices other than approved car seats during take-off, taxi and landing period.  Since these devices were not specifically designed for aircraft use, they could cause more harm than good. Baby B’Air Flight Vests® patent pending design addresses these safety concerns.

Until this rule is changed, the Baby B’Air Flight Vest® cannot be used during takeoff, taxi and landing in the U.S. These regulations are clearly marked on the back of each vest for the benefit of the parent and flight crew.  If you have any questions or problems please e-mail us or call 1-800-417-5228.

The FAA acknowledges use of the vest during flight.

The FAA acknowledges that carriers may be used during flight and that they may prevent injury associated with turbulence.  This information was posted to the FAA website by our request!  However you should consider that ordinary carriers may actually cause injury at certain times.  The Baby B’Air® is designed to address the safety concerns found in aircraft. The FAA confirms permitted use in the Installing a CRS on an Airplane section, paragraph #2, on the FAA website page about Flying with Children.

For technical reference please consult the full version of 14 CFR Parts 91, 121, 125 and 135.  Many major airlines have amended their training and manuals to inform flight crews that Baby B’Air® is being used by passengers in accordance with FAA regulations.

Testing

The Baby B’Air Flight Vest® has been tested for strength by an FAA-authorized testing laboratory. In strength tests, the Baby B’Air Flight Vest® was shown to withstand forces in excess of 17 times the force of gravity, which exceeds FAA-mandated strength standards for the aircraft seats themselves.  The Baby B'Air® is tested to meet or exceed FAA seating requirements for aircraft seats.

Patent Pending.
